The PH and Microbial Flora of the Stomach

Abstract
This prospective study examine gastric pH and microbial flora in surgical patients who were admitted to the Department of General Surgery in Kosin Medical Center from January 1993 to February 1994. Bacteriological studies were carried out on
samples of
gastric juice obtained from 196 patients through endoscopy and during the operation. The purpose of this report is the assessment of gastric pH and microbial flora according to gastric acidity.
@ES The results are summarized as follows:
@EN 1) The most frequent disease encountered in this study was gastric cancer in 169 cases(86.2%)
2) The average gastric pH was 5.3(range 0.1-8.0) in 113 cases. in which the gastric pH and pH increased in relation to aging(P=0.02).
3) Microbial colonisation increased according to pH(P=0.0001).
4) The overall identified colony count was 291: Gram positive cocci 62.2%, Gram negative bacilli 52%, and Gram positive bacilli 13.8%.
5) The isolated flora were Escherichia coli (10.7%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (7.7%), Enterobacter cloacae (6.6%) Klebsiella oxytoca (3.1%), Enterobacter aerogenes (2.6%), Citrobacter freundii, Serratia liquifactious, Staphylococcus, Hafnia alvei
and
Candida sp. (19.4%), the most common species found.
6) Use of prophylactic antibiotics for Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria is needed according to our study.
